This has been shouting out at me from the shelves for ages, but I didn’t want to cheat on my Lucas Paw Paw Ointment – I know many of you feel the same way! So I took one for the team and dropped it into my basket, and have been trialling it for a few weeks now.
It’s all-natural and petrochemical-free, and boasts an impressive combination of: castor seed oil, coconut oil, cacao butter, mango butter, macadamia oil, carnauba wax, jojoba esters (wax), rice bran wax, beeswax, and papaya extract (the box that it came in also lists sunflower seed oil and sweet almond oil, so let’s throw these in as well). These create a very sweet smell, which I’m totally ok with (my love for sweet stuff has been made obvious previously), but it could be quite sickly to some people. And the texture is fairly runny, so you don’t need much, making this 10g tube go quite a long way. It doesn’t absorb enough if you have dry or chapped lips, but would be perfect for those who just need some additional moisture.
Those ingredients above are listed in the same order as they are on the back of the tube, so I found it odd that the papaya extract came last on the list – until I used it. Although it shouts that it’s Paw Paw Lip Balm, this is just one of many ingredients, and the product feels quite oily and sticky. For anyone who has used Coconut Oil, that was the overwhelming texture to me, and it wasn’t pleasant on my lips. It definitely hydrates them, but only for as long as the product lasts, which isn’t long.
One other aspect I found puzzling was these little – what look like – exfoliating beads. Except they don’t exfoliate, and sometimes they are quite difficult to pop, which means you have to apply this lip balm with a mirror to make sure you don’t end up with little white dots on your lips. Maybe I’m just missing something, but they are not explained or mentioned anywhere on the packaging or the website, so they are a bit confusing.
And the packaging:
I really love the little tube it comes in, especially the slanted lip applicator. Even the box was appealing, all pink and font-y, so I wish I liked this product more!
The fine print:
