Jurlique launched the Herbal Recovery range back in 1993, and the Advanced Serum Youth Defence Active Gel Concentrate* was released in August this year. Man, it was everywhere. I even posted it on one of my short-lived Wishlist Wednesday posts. So I was incredibly excited when I was given the chance to trial and review it – and I was not disappointed.
(Quick side note: If you haven’t used a serum before, it goes on after toner but before moisturiser. It has a high absorption rate, so they can pack in more active ingredients & your skin will get all the good nutrients penetrating deeper into your skin than standard moisturisers.)
The Herbal Recovery Advanced Serum contains Jurlique’s exclusive Naturadiance PB18+, which is a botanical complex that works within the layers of the skin to protect, revitalise and recover.
To revitalise, it contains 15 Bio-Intrinsic Botanicals chosen for their abilities to help rebalance, condition, soften, soothe, hydrate and help deliver radiant skin.

To recover, it contains 3 Breakthrough Ingredients: Persian Silk Extract to strengthen skin cell capacity to shield against environmental stress, Wu-Zhu-Yu Extract to boost micro-circulation and smooth skin, and Peach Leaf Extract to recover skin vitality and promote cellular regeneration.
To protect, it contains a combination of high quality ingredients such as Niacinamide, Biosaccharide Gum and Magnesium Silicate, to enhance and reinforce the antioxidant and skin barrier protection benefits of the Naturadiance PB18+ complex.
And I think that’s enough cosmetics jargon! It’s botanically amazing – but onto the more important question. Why did I fall in love with it?
Well for the first week, I used it in the mornings underneath my Sukin moisturiser. I didn’t use it at night because I wanted to introduce it slowly – I wasn’t sure if the ingredients would be too rich for my super sensitive skin. Then after a week without disaster, I started using it both morning and night, and tested it with a few different moisturisers as well. It works like a dream. My skin didn’t react at all! Plus it has a gorgeous rose/lavendar scent to it, so is relaxing to use.
It only takes 2 small pumps to cover my entire face & neck, and at night I use one more for my décolletage. So although this is expensive at $165 for 100ml, you use such a tiny amount each time that it would last for months, even with daily use – so on a per use costing, I believe it’s worth every cent. The serum is the perfect consistency, slightly watery and not at all sticky, so that it glides onto your skin easily and absorbs quickly.
This serum would be ideal for most skin types, from dry to oily to sensitive, and probably works best for anyone in between puberty and menopause – it’s aimed at those who are just starting to notice the first signs of ageing. It is a fairly generic serum, in that it doesn’t pinpoint any particular skin problem, but it works miracles in restoring and maintaining healthy, youthful skin. My skin definitely looks hydrated and has a radiant glow, which I could really get used to!
The bottle itself is the usual Jurlique shape, but with a subtle shimmer to it. Plus there is an expiration date on the base (super handy for people who often open products and then forget about them!) and a plastic lid that you can use for travel, which fits snugly over the pump to prevent accidental spills.
Have you used the Herbal Recovery Advanced Serum – or any of the Jurlique serums?
