Your hands are exposed to an enormous variety of things every single day, so it’s important to look after them. Mine tend to get dry around the fingertips and inside the palm, which means that I like to have a good quality hand cream within reach at all times – in my handbag, on the coffee table, on my work desk! And the best hand creams are the ones that keep you rubbing your hands together long after it has soaked in – I love that smooth hand feeling!
Grown Alchemist Intensive Hand Cream – Persian Rose & Argan Extract* ($27.95)
Grown is certified organic and cruelty free, and their minimalist aesthetic means that their products have likely graced your Instagram feed on more than one occasion. This hand cream boasts persian rose as its chief ingredient, which does a lot more than lend an intoxicating aroma. It replenishes and softens the skin, delaying the early signs of ageing, thanks to a cocktail of flavonoids and vitamins A, B3, C, D and E. There are also Tamanu and Argan Oils, which contain Omega’s 3, 6 & 7 to strengthen the skin, and hyaluronic acid to provide deeply penetrating hydration. Fast absorbing, my hands are incredibly smooth and touchable for a good 2-3 hours after using this – which is great, but it does make me question the word ‘intensive’, as people with really dry hands might need a bit more oomph. It smells like persian fairy floss and roses, which some might find a bit too ‘old lady’ – but luckily my Nan is more lawn bowls and beer (she’s probably cooler than me) so I can’t get enough of the delicate and girlie scent.
The Jojoba Company Lemon & Coconut Hand Cream* ($22.95)
WARNING: do not use on an empty stomach.
That’s what they need to include on the tube, because every time I use this, I end up craving lemon meringue pie! It smells SO delicious, you don’t even understand. It uses natural coconut oil and lemon essential oil to achieve this amazing smell, but they also have hydration skills and antioxidant properties, so it’s a total win-win. And I’m so excited that my hands get the benefits of jojoba oil, without the funky smell that comes with pure jojoba oil, because obviously that’s one of the main ingredients. It leaves a slightly greasy sheen for the first couple of minutes after application, but that’s only because the inclusion of cocoa, shea and mango butters create quite a thick formula – this will definitely disappear once the product soaks in, and it’s worth the wait.
Natural Instinct Hand and Nail Cream* ($9.95)
Probably the most ‘heavy-duty’ of the creams here, this one means business and doesn’t mess around. With a powerful concoction of shea butter, pro-vitamin B5, vitamin E, jojoba, sweet almond and rosehip oils, it nourishes hands and repairs fingernails. Plus, it boasts red grape extract, which improves collagen and elastin while acting as an anti-ageing agent, fighting off free radicals (anyone else picturing a grape with a gun right now?). It absorbs quickly, but there’s something odd about the feel of my hands afterwards. I can’t really explain – they’re definitely hydrated, but they aren’t left feeling moisturised and plump, instead they feel a bit – chalky? It does go away, but is an odd feeling. It does feel amazing for my nails though, and while I didn’t notice an enormous difference (I was cursed with the world’s most flimsy fingernails) they didn’t peel as much as usual. The essential oils gives it a very natural scent, which doesn’t linger for too long, so it won’t interfere with any perfume.
Premium Spa SOS Hand Cream* ($6.99)
I’ve found the holy grail of hand creams! To say that this little underdog took me by surprise is an understatement – I took it into work the day after trying it and pretty much forced everyone around me to use some. I then went out and bought them the 250g pump bottle so they could have silky smooth hands all day, every day! It really is that good. First, the ginger and orange scent is both zesty and heady, reminiscent of a much more expensive product. Second, the formula is thin yet creamy, absorbing almost immediately and leaving your hands unbelievably silky for a good 3-4 hours. I’ve developed a habit of just sitting there rubbing my hands together like a cartoon villain after using this! And third is the ingredients, which help to reduce discolouration and pigmentation while nourishing the hands and nails. We’ve got some of our old favourites, such as jojoba and rosehip oils, and shea and cocoa butters, but it’s the addition of ginger, licorice and Australian honey that really make this shine. Ginger stimulates bloodflow and promotes brighter, firmer skin through free-radical fighting antioxidants. Licorice improves cell regeneration and reduces swelling, inflammation and pigmentation. And honey has antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which help with moisture absorption and retention, giving your skin that sought-after healthy glow. BOOM! What more could you want?
